I've joined forces with the wonderful Alex Beaumier once again, this time to make a cover of Tee Time, a piece written and performed by Woody Goss of the luminary funk group Vulfpeck. This song was originally composed as a tribute to prolific pianist Richard Tee, and employs his signature "pumping" comping style. Even in the hayday of this keyboard's usage, it was rare to see it used in the studio in anything more than a limited capacity, and was relegated to being a "good enough" portable approximation of a real acoustic piano for use at live shows. In recent years, the CP70 (and CP80, CP60) has fallen by the wayside in favor of other vintage electric pianos like the Fender Rhodes or Wurlitzer. However, in my opinion Yamaha's CP pianos have an equally-distinct, unique, and interesting tone to those keyboards, which is why I was so interested in learning and performing this piece in particular! I would have loved to source a real CP70 or 80 to perform this on, but unfortunately I had to settle with the next best thing; a Yamaha Reface CP, which has a great modelling of the CP80. In my opinion, it makes no sense to attempt a cover of this song on anything other than a CP70/80 sound.
