The city is located halfway between Mila and Constantine and is watered by the wadi of the same name. Home to the ancient baths of Pompeianus, the spa site was an important crossing point for the Romans. A small town founded in colonial times, it was a notable center of the region, notably served by its station connected to Constantine. Since the twentieth century, Oued Athmania has housed an important hydroelectric dam supplying water to the surrounding municipalities. Many hammams are present in the city.
