The most common method of breast reconstruction currently performed in the US uses tissue expander and breast implants. Breast Implants Implants are placed in a woman’s chest under the skin, fat, and muscle. Expander The expander is basically an implant with nothing in it. It’s sort of like an empty balloon. The Surgery 1)To prepare chest skin for insertion of a breast implant, a tissue expander is placed under the chest muscle. 2)Saline is injected into the tissue expander to gradually stretch the skin. The expansion procedure is repeated about 6-8 times during weekly or biweekly office visits. 3)After the tissue is stretched, another operation is done to remove the expander. 4)Then an implant that’s filled with either saline or silicone gel is placed in the chest.
