The city of Colombo is the executive and judicial capital of Sri Lanka. It was once also the legislative capital with the Parliament, now known as the Old Parliament Building, being located in it. Three colonial powers, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British, ruled the island of Sri Lanka in whole or part and have left their mark on it. The former two primarily ruled primarily the maritime provinces and the British, who succeeded the Dutch, ruled the entire island from the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815, when Colombo became its capital. In this first of a series of videos, we will be looking at some of the old places and monuments that have survived to this day in the city of Colombo and stand as witnesses to the country's rich historical legacy.
