The Empire Builders, directed by Mike Ricci

This unusual play, written by French playwright, artist and jazz musician Boris Vian, is essentially a post-war examination of the prevailing fear people still lived with in a society trying to rebuild itself. I was introduced to his work while in college, having read his surrealistic novel 'Froth on the Daydream', and just loved his imagery and strange juxtaposition of people and places. My production of this play was met with confusion and some pushback, as the audiences were not ready to be challenged by this kind of work. The character of the Schmurz was particularly difficult for them to grasp. It was a hard-earned lesson for me as a director, since I mistakenly thought that they would embrace such a different kind of experience, but that was not to be. I've always appreciated the work we did in it, even though it was not met with any measure of success by the community. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
