In this public talk, Prof. Dr. Juvaria Jafri will discuss from the perspective of political economy some of the ways in which poor countries encounter financialisation that has a distinctly hierarchical and asymmetrical nature. The focus will be on inclusive finance as this reflects, and can also exacerbate, uneven access to finance. Using examples of banking and digital welfare in South Asia, she will explore how this system relies on collaborations and partnerships between the financial sector, development organizations, and philanthropic initiatives. These collaborations drive shadow banking networks and practices and financial technologies that reproduce inequalities. Prof. Dr. Juvaria Jafri is based at the University of London where she is a Lecturer in International Political Economy. She received her PhD in 2019 for her doctoral research on shadow banking and inclusive finance in Pakistan. Her previous degrees are from SZABIST, in Karachi, Pakistan, and the University of Toronto in Canada. She also has several years of work experience working for investment banking and management consulting firms in Karachi, and Islamabad. The event took place on 9th March, 2021.
