Kelp4Less Grow Pack vs Miracle-Gro: Pepper Experiment RESULTS

I've finally been able to compile the data from this Summer's pepper supplement experiment. I have to admit, the results were not what I expected. I was using one pepper in each SIP, self-watering bucket. I had a Control, a Miracle Gro Plant Feed supplement and a Kelp4Less Grow/Bloom Pack supplement. Watch video Part 1 for how I set up the test:    • Kelp4Less Grow / Bloom Packs vs Miracle Gr...   9:20 --Skip to the final results THE FIRST MAJOR SHOCK was seeing how badly the Miracle Gro Moisture Control potting mix worked in my SIP bucket. I added 10% perlite and 10% vermiculite. Logically, one would expect the potency of the potting mix to be slightly reduced. But the control plant fared so poorly that there has to be more to it. In June we had 10.4 inches of rain. I believe that the excessive rain water resulted in run-off that leached away some of the synthetic potting mix nutrients. Both synthetic and organic fertilizers can wash away and enter our streams. But some forms are especially soluble and are more prone to run-off. Using an SIP container allowed me to capture some of that water. But because I had completely filled the reservoir at the beginning of my test, the reservoir wasn't able to catch as much. SECONDLY, I WAS SURPRISED to see the Miracle Gro Plant Feed turn out so well. With an NPK of 24-8-16, I expected to see excess vegetative growth and not nearly as much fruit production. Miracle Gro also offers a Tomato Plant food which is 18-18-20. I am now curious to see how well it would work in comparison. FINALLY, I EXPECTED MORE from the Kelp4Less Bloom Pack. It has an NPK of 2-20-20. The Cal Mag Plus is 8-0-0. So the combined NPK for the entire bloom regimen was 10-20-20. With certain plants or in a different soil / mix this might have been adequate. But in my situation, it did not suffice. I experienced ZERO occurrences of BER. And there were also more budding sites. However, the overall fruit size was the smallest of all three plants. During the bloom phase, I was watering the plant with Cal Mag Plus first. Once applied to the soil, I watered with the Bloom Pack. Did some of the calcium react with the phosphorus? Or was the soil able to buffer the 2 separate solutions? QUESTIONS: Should there be a delay in Cal Mag Plus and Bloom Pack watering schedules? Does the Kelp4Less Bloom Pack need more Nitrogen? Should I have alternated with Grow Pack and Bloom Pack, every other week? Is there a toxic build up of any of the macro / micro nutrients? Miracle Gro tells you how much area a given weight of fertilizer will cover. Kelp4Less does not state a coverage area. Do I need to increase the application rates or amounts for better results? CONCLUSION: Try to avoid reliance on supplements if you possibly can. Focus on building healthy, rich organic soil, when possible. However, if you are not where you need to be nutrient-wise, recognize the temporary benefits that supplements might offer. In particular, if you are doing SIP or container gardening, watch out for nutrient run-off. Mid season, you might be forced to turn to some sort of nutrient replenishment. Of course, this test was with root drenches. Foliar feeding is a viable option as well. And in particular, compost tea might be an attractive option for all-natural, organic supplementation.
