In Romans chapter 6, the apostle Paul emphasizes the change of life that has occurred in those who trust in the finished work of the Lord Jesus: as believers, we have died with Christ and have been raised to new life in Him, so we cannot return to our former life dominated by sin. He used the metaphor of sin being personified as a king; we are not to allow sin to reign over us. In this section, he changes the picture to our status as slaves. We were slaves to sin, but now we are slaves to righteousness. That may be a jarring illustration of our standing with God, but it is true that our Lord bought us out of the slave market of sin - redeemed us - and Paul reminds us that we "have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body" (1 Corinthians 6:20). We glorify our Savior by doing His will as happy slaves of righteousness.
