In this video, Dr. Mark Mason, board certified plastic surgeon with 20 years of experience, explains the difference between silicone and saline breast implants used in breast augmentation surgery including the differences in external and internal materials. While most breast implants have a silicone rubber outer shell, the contents of the implant can vary. Saline implants are filled with a saline solution similar to saltwater. The solution is not unlike tears or sweat. This is a good choice for recipients that have a significant amount of soft tissue to cover the implant. Silicone breast implants are filled with a silicone gel. This gives the implant a firmer, more natural feel and better mimics actual breast tissue. Silicone implants work well for most women, especially those that do not have much soft tissue to cover the implant. Additionally, silicone implants form a more natural shape. Both types of breast implants can have good results. The difference is whether the implant is placed below or on top of the soft tissue, but the expected result should be the same. The goal is for a sloped, natural look as opposed to a round ball. Let Dr. Mark Mason and his team at Southlake Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa, located in Southlake, TX, show you the benefits of silicone and saline breast implants, and answer any questions you have about breast augmentation.
