Marcus Brigstocke, on The Now Show, on the 2nd of May 2014 - '0.8% Growth and 'In Work' (Un)employment' With zero hour contracts, employees are 'on call' to work but not necessarily actually employed. As a result, they are often given no hours of work, and as a result of that, no pay. These people count as 'employed' but do not receive money from their 'employment' and so still have to receive maintenance payments. This system is very convenient for certain employers, because it means they can pick and choose when they want to pay people for work; but it is incredibly dysfunctional when it comes to actually employing people, such that they can support themselves. All the hours that they spend, 'employed' by Shysters Ltd, can not be spent doing anything else, and so zero hours contracts prohibit availability for other jobs, that might actually pay!
