Christmas celebrations can leave behind a big mess. Friday, we searched Chattanooga for what people are throwing away... and wondered, could some of that waste be recycled, instead? Our journey began on residential streets of Chattanooga, digging through trash. Boxes from toys, new pots and pans, and lots of bottles filled trashcans. The discarded remains of Christmas morning sat on the side of the road, waiting for pickup. Where does this trash go once it leaves your driveway? To a landfill, where it is compacted and covered with dirt to make room for more trash. Last year, the Chattanooga landfill collected almost 55,000 tons of trash. But some Chattanoogans use an alternative way to get rid of their unwanted items: recycling. At the Chattanooga Recycling Centers, staff members work to help the community sort and discard all of their recyclables. Aluminum cans, glass, cardboard, and paper are collected and reused rather than tossed into the landfill. I caught up with some people there to see why they went out of their way to get rid of their Christmas trash.
