Planning for a house fire isn’t exactly a “fun” family activity, but it’s an important one. In this week’s Ask SafeWise, we’ll show you how to create an escape plan for your family and plan for the worst. It only takes an hour to lay out an escape plan. Just identify the main exits in your home, find vulnerabilities like stairs or areas without smoke detectors. Everyone gets jobs and everyone gets help to escape. And finally, don’t forget the meeting spot. Designate a meeting spot outside your home where everyone can meet. This is also where you’ll call the fire department once you’re out of the house. And remember, once you’re out of the house or building, do not go back inside. For anyone left inside, be sure to tell the fire department so they can look for them. We have more resources below on SafeWise.com where you can learn about preventing house fires, and what you should do if one happens, along with lineups of our favorite smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and fire escape ladders.
