14/100 THE MUSIC AS IT HAPPENED BY THE PEOPLE WHO MADE IT Bhangra Beat Revisited 14. Can I mention that we’ve just started a merch store to raise funds for new productions, here it is https://bhangra-beat-revisited.creato... At the moment our store only features tee shirts etc., of Surj Sahota from original Bhangra Beat video material. Let me know what you think (good or bad) and maybe the artists you would like to see featured on future merch. The show gets off to a lively start with Paul Kumar's 'La Bhangra' and 'London City'. Paul, and his dancers, didn't let location filming in an inclement Manchester city centre dampen their spirits, however you may by able to spot the brief appearance of of an umbrella protecting the camera. We are then treated to Achanak and Pardesi captivating the crowd at Bradford's iconic 3000 capacity Maestro's Night Club, as ever both bands deliver a consummate live performance. Achanak, through the fusing of traditional vocals with energetic western dance rhythms, became one of the pioneers of 'New Wave Bhangra'. The band, which formed in 1989, has toured all over Europe as well as Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, The USA, and Indonesia. Tabla player Ninder Johal has stated that he is particularly proud that the band have made such an impact in India. Vijay Bhatti has explained, that the move into international touring was as a result of the diminishing popularity of live Bhangra in their home country, however this has led to the band sharing the stage with such diverse performers as The Prodigy, Tom Jones, Snow Patrol and Fat Boy Slim. Ninder Johal is also the man behind Nacheral Records. They have released music from Anakhi, Johnny Zee, TSB Golden Star, Sahara, Sona Family and DigiBhangers Tigerstyle. Nacheral scored it's biggest hit with the Punjabi MC remix of Mundian To Bach Ke, the bhangra song performed by Punjabi artist Labh Janjua broke into the UK charts at number 5. Achanaks last album 'Game Set & NACH', five years in the making, was released in 2016. The tracks performed at Maestros are 'Tere Naal Nachna' and 'Nachle'. Always regarded as musically innovative, The Pardesi Music Machine can claim the noteworthy achievement, in 1994, of being the first Bhangra band to play Glastonbury, followed up by a trip to the Edinburgh Festival in the August of that year. Interestingly as with Paul Kumar, earlier in the clip, Silinder Pardesi cites, the 'Golden Voice of the Silver Screen', Mohammed Rafi as a major influence. If you enjoy viewing these reruns, which have been carefully digitised straight from the original master tapes, then please give the channel a boost by subscribing and/or commenting, its really appreciated and very helpful. Also feel free to help the channel grow (through uploading old shows and producing new ones), by buying me a coffee at, https://ko-fi.com/bhangrabeatrevisited Again, it’s really appreciated. Music, from the golden age, that will always matter. best regards, raagshify@bhangrabeat.biz
