Defensiveness is a basic way to protect ourselves, however, when we have chronic patterns of defensiveness in our communication style, our marriage starts to feel like a battlefield. We end up arguing excessively and that conflict may lead to separation or divorce. We tend to take for granted that our defensiveness will be understood…but we’re dead wrong. Our partners don’t like to be gaslit, stonewalled, or made to feel that their emotions and opinions are invalid or that you don’t care. The defensiveness in your communication leads your partner to develop insecure attachment or avoidant attachment in the relationship with you and suddenly everything feels “hard”. If you’ve been told you’re stubborn, defensive, can’t look at yourself, or you take no responsibility, or don’t care about others feelings, this should be a major red flag for you that you need to make some changes before your relationship ends. Life’s too short to live in an unhealthy and unfulfilling relationship. We want to be loved and to have a healthy relationship. Don’t wait any longer - break these dysfunctional patterns now - stop waiting for things to get better.
