I am Joseph. I have been an expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now. Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food! In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid Autumn time as we are given a tour around our dear friends farm house, which is for sale, in a rural mountain village in central Portugal. I start the virtual tour by introducing Mitzy and myself as we explain the reason behind our neighbour and friend selling her farm and home in central Portugal, we are not estate agents and have no financial involvement in the sale of this property but we believe this to be one of the most beautiful farms around and a bargain too, so it is our pleasure to help out our lovely friend and neighbour, Lucilia. We start the tour by walking down the long 1km driveway, spotting all the different trees, chestnuts, cherries and of course big, beautiful, mature olive trees. The track runs along side an icy cold mountain stream which has numerous little waterfalls and places perfect for taking a dip in the summer. The stream bank is also dotted with lots of aromatic fennel plants, which means this walk is a delight for all Mitzy and my senses as we smell the beautiful herbs and hear the gushing water. Once at the corner of the property and at the end of the private track that shares access only with a couple of ruins we turn onto the properties private entrance. Where we see the three phase electricity posts and turn ourselves round to see the ruins I was speaking of and in the distance the beautiful Serra da Estrela mountain range, you can see the peak of the mountain which is mainland Portugal's highest point, at 1,993 metres altitude. Together Mitzy and I make our way up through the farm to the farm house, the 2 hectare land here is situated right in the fruit bowl of Portugal, the area famous for cherries and peaches predominantly, although other fruit too of course. This means the farm has perfect soil and climate to grow amazing cherries and/or peaches which in my opinion would provide an excellent income of money from the land at €10,000 per hectare for cherries or peaches for example! We take a look at the farms big medieval, rustic bread oven, with its walls made completely out of slate rock and oak rafters with terracotta tiles. I can just imagine sitting on the patio by the bread oven, making homemade pizza or a farm house loaf, with a glass of wine in hand watching the sunset over the mountains. How romantic! We look beside the bread oven to the farm house, a cute slate stone building measuring 70m2, or 140m2 usable area over two floors. We were unable to view the inside unfortunately due to the brambles encasing the doorways, but Lucilia has promised she will clear the land and house for any prospective buyers. The inside however is neither here nor there as it is a shell needing reconstructing. The walls of the property though are solid and need little to no reconstruction work. The ruin is pre 1951 and needs no planning permission to be rebuilt. Once we had looked around the whole farm we made our way back to our farm, to one of the olive groves more specifically as it is olive season. My father and I grab our shakers, nets and our compact tractor and connect up the shakers to the battery and roll out our nets as we make a start. We have 125 olive trees and being only the two of us working we can only do around 15 trees per day, meaning around 1/2 weeks of work picking olives, hopefully much olive oil too! Right at the end of the day I talk a little about this week and how everything went, standing by a couple of our one year old apple trees that my father and I planted last winter and eating a freshly picked apple. It was nice that we managed to look around the property for sale and seeing everything that it has to offer, such a cheap farm too with a lot of potential!
