With 6,090 episodes in its 29 seasons from 1955 to 1984, “Captain Kangaroo” aired on CBS, and became one of the longest-running children’s television series. The show starred Bob Keeshan as Captain Kangaroo and Hugh Brannum as Mr. Greenjeans. Created by Keeshan, the story centered around life in the “Treasure House.” At the opening of the show, the theme music would play as Captain Kangaroo unlocked the doors of the Treasure House. Then, like turning a switch, the music would stop when he hung his large ring of keys on a nail. The Captain Kangaroo Theme, titled “Puffin’ Billy,” was written by Edward G. White and recorded by the Melodi Light Orchestra. The track of the 1934 song was from the British “Chappell Recorded Music Library” with the original title referring to a British steam locomotive. In the UK, the tune was famous as the theme to the BBC radio program “Children’s Favourites.” With his large ring of keys, Capt. Charles “Keys” Manning opens this presentation by unlocking the “keys” to his piano. Then he’s ready to improvise “Puffin’ Billy,” the Captain Kangaroo Theme Song.
