Computers Networks Media Access Control All networks have more than one computer, which is required to share the same data medium (eg,wire). So if two computers simultaneously tried to place data into the wire,a collision can occur and data might be corrupted unless a method is used to resolve the collision gracefully. In conclusion, if data is to be sent over the network, we must find a way to meet the following conditions: Inserting the data into the cable without conflicting with other data. The recipient can receive the data with relative assurance that they are not damaged in a data collision during transmission. The set of rules that defines how data is input into the cable is called an access method. Access methods must be in agreement with the way they handle the data. If different computers use different access methods, then the network will fail, because some methods will dominate the cable. Generally, the access methods prevent simultaneous input of data to the shared transmission medium. Thus, ensuring that only one computer at a time can send data, access methods keep organized the procedures for sending and receiving network data. There are three ways to avoid simultaneous use of the transmission medium: 1.Carrier-sense multiple access methods 1. With collision detection, 2. With collision avoidance, 2. Token passing method that enables individual data sending 3. Demand priority method. videolearner.com FREE INTERNET TEACHING VISUALISED COURSES SPYROS ZYGOURIS
