We had a private excursion with Scuba Safari Aruba and completed two dives of about 45 minutes each. The first was the Pedernales. The Pedernales wreck in Aruba is one of the island’s most famous dive sites. The Pedernales was a World War II-era oil tanker that was attacked and partially destroyed by a German U-boat in 1942. History of the Wreck The Pedernales was a Lake Tanker, a type of vessel used to transport oil. In February 1942, during World War II, Aruba was a crucial site for Allied oil refining, and the German U-boat U-156 attacked the island’s refinery and ships offshore. The U-boat torpedoed the Pedernales, causing severe damage, but the ship did not fully sink. The ship’s middle section was too damaged to be repaired, so it was cut away and left behind. The bow and stern sections were salvaged, refitted, and used for military service during the war. The Antilla wreck in Aruba is one of the largest and most famous shipwrecks in the Caribbean. It is a German cargo ship that was scuttled (intentionally sunk) during World War II. History of the Wreck The Antilla was a German merchant ship, built in 1939, measuring 400 feet (122 meters) in length. It was used for cargo transport between Germany and the Caribbean. In May 1940, when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands, Aruba—then a Dutch territory—declared the ship an enemy vessel. To prevent the Dutch from seizing the ship, the German crew scuttled (intentionally sank) the Antilla by setting it on fire and flooding compartments. The ship broke in half but remains mostly intact, making it one of the best-preserved WWII wrecks in the region.
