Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas – 2nd Sunday of Great Lent (ROCOR Julian Calendar) Homily by Fr. David of Rome St. Clement of Rome Mission | Rome, GA On this Second Sunday of the Holy and Great Fast, we commemorate our Holy Father Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica, the great defender of hesychasm and the uncreated divine energies. In this homily, Fr. David explores how St. Gregory's teachings affirm that we can truly participate in God's life through prayer (especially the Jesus Prayer), ascetic struggle, and the sacraments—without confusing God's unknowable essence with His deifying energies. This Sunday builds on the Triumph of Orthodoxy, showing that the victory over Barlaamism safeguards the possibility of real communion with God: "He who has seen Me has seen the Father" (John 14:9), yet God remains transcendent. May St. Gregory's prayers strengthen us in the Fast! Timestamps (approximate): 0:05 – Opening in the Name of the Trinity & the Jesus Prayer 1:00 – Simplicity of "Lord have mercy" – even in Southern life 2:15 – The "second Triumph of Orthodoxy" after icons last week 3:40 – The Orthodox "Way" passed down for 2,000 generations 4:10 – Light in the church as analogy for spiritual/uncreated light 5:25 – God's essence: utterly unknowable (beware of idols!) 6:00 – God's energies: knowable and deifying, like the sun's light & warmth 7:15 – Transfiguration on Mount Tabor: beholding the uncreated light 11:00 – Unceasing prayer: shortening the gaps & quick repentance 15:00 – Hesychasm for all: prayer rope, breathing prayer, closing exhortation Subscribe for more homilies, liturgical services, and Orthodox teachings from St. Clement of Rome Mission in Rome, Georgia.
