No Woman Left Behind: webinar with Lan Luong and Anil Gorkhaly on women in eye health

Dutch hieronder In celebration of women's month, Eye Care Foundation hosted a webinar entitled No Woman Left Behind after the UN Women policy brief with the same name. The goal of the policy is to help understand and create awareness how women are disproportionately affected by eye and vision problems. Women are often seen as caregivers and as such, in some cultures, there are also expectations that they prioritize their family's (eye)health more than their own. In this webinar, Lan Luong, country director of Eye Care Foundation Vietnam shares her experiences as a woman leader in the eye care sector. She highlights the importance of having women representation in the workforce and decision-making. On the other hand, Anil Gorkhaly, country director of Eye Care Foundation Nepal shares his experiences about the Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHV) in Nepal. They are the primary contact point of the community whenever one has (eye) health problem. Nederlands Ter gelegenheid van Women’s Month organiseerde Eye Care Foundation een webinar met de titel *No Woman Left Behind*, geïnspireerd op de beleidsnotitie van UN Women met dezelfde naam. Het doel van dit beleid is om meer inzicht te geven in en bewustwording te creëren over hoe vrouwen onevenredig vaak worden getroffen door oog- en zichtproblemen. Vrouwen worden vaak gezien als de primaire zorgverleners binnen het gezin. In sommige culturen bestaat daarom ook de verwachting dat zij de (oog)gezondheid van hun familie voorrang geven boven hun eigen gezondheid. Tijdens dit webinar deelde Lan Luong, country director van Eye Care Foundation Vietnam, haar ervaringen als vrouwelijke leider in de oogzorgsector. Zij benadrukte het belang van vrouwelijke vertegenwoordiging binnen de beroepsgroep en bij besluitvorming. Daarnaast vertelde Anil Gorkhaly, country director van Eye Care Foundation Nepal, over zijn ervaringen met de Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHV) in Nepal. Deze vrouwelijke vrijwilligers zijn vaak het eerste aanspreekpunt binnen de gemeenschap wanneer iemand een (oog)gezondheidsprobleem heeft.
