Managing the Gift of Your ADHD - Medication Alternatives (or supplements!)

In honor of October being ADHD Awareness Month, I want to talk about alternative management strategies for ADHD, and techniques that can help minimize symptoms without being reliant on medication. For a large portion of the time I've been working in the ADHD space (okay, pretty much all of it), I've been labeled as anti-medication, but I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight: I am not anti-medication, I am pro-holistic approaches. Although I am a doctor, I have always been very up-front about the fact that I am not a medical doctor, and I cannot and will not ever suggest that you go on or off medication of any kind. That is a conversation for you to have with your medical provider. Some people find ADHD medication to be extremely helpful, while others see little to no difference, or worse, feel "zombie-like" and as if it dulls some of their creative spark. But whether you see a positive difference with ADHD medication or not, it is only one piece of the puzzle, and I prefer to look at the whole picture. There are many different factors that play a role in how your ADHD presents and what symptoms you may experience, as well as how severe those symptoms may be. Diet, environment, and support structures all play a crucial role in whether you experience ADHD as a gift or a curse. Many people with ADHD experience food and chemical sensitivities that can exacerbate the negative aspects of their ADHD, and some recent studies seem to suggest that diets rich in protein and magnesium, along with certain supplements, can help with focus (and the ability to direct said focus!) and even improve the efficacy of ADHD medications for those who do take them. We often find things like fluorescent lights to be a sensory nightmare, to be avoided at all costs, whereas natural lighting or soft mood lighting may scratch our brains just right. Traditional learning environments, where success is based on rote memorization and asking questions is frowned upon, are our own personal hell, but give us an interactive curriculum where curiosity is rewarded and we thrive. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be putting out several videos talking about things you can do - again, not medical advice, but things that I have found through experience to work for myself and my clients - to have a better experience as an ADHD individual in a world that, let's face it, was designed by and for neurotypicals. I hope that you'll give them a watch, and maybe consider subscribing to my channel to make sure you don't miss any helpful tips.
