When installing tile on a cement backer board, like Durock, or Hardie backer board, it is critical to follow the manufacturers recommendations and instructions on how to install them. These companies, design, test and develop these products, so they know how they should be installed to perform as designed and to be trouble free. If you read the directions, if you look at the TCNA, (Tile Council of North America) you will find that they should be installed on a bed of thinset, and that the seams should be tapped, it is not optional, but specifically called out as a requirement, along with the fastener type schedule. Ignoring these can and will result in failure of the floor. There are some people on YouTube that promote an improper way of installing these products, and should be ignored, always follow manufacturer requirements to have a successful install.
