*Josie and the Pussycats* (2001) is what happens when Hollywood takes a beloved cartoon about a rock band solving mysteries and decides, Nah, let’s make it about corporate brainwashing and capitalism instead. What should’ve been a simple, goofy teen comedy turns into a full-blown satire of the music industry—one that’s as unsubtle as a flashing neon sign, but hey, at least it commits. Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid do their best as the titular trio, playing aspiring musicians who suddenly skyrocket to fame overnight, only to discover they’re being used as glorified billboards for hidden advertising. Meanwhile, Parker Posey and Alan Cumming ham it up as the film’s cartoonishly evil record label execs, running a conspiracy so ridiculous it makes actual music industry corruption seem tame. And let’s talk about the product placement—because holy corporate sellout*, this movie has *everything plastered with logos. The joke is that it’s satire, but after a while, you start wondering if the movie itself was secretly funded by Target and McDonald’s. To be fair, *Josie and the Pussycats* does have some genuinely funny moments, and its pop-punk soundtrack is way better than it has any right to be. But for a film that wants to critique soulless commercialism, it sure spends a lot of time shoving brands in your face. Is it fun? Sure. Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. Is it the deep-cut industry takedown it wants to be? Ehh. Let’s just say, if the film had its own subliminal message, it’d probably be something like "You’re enjoying this ironic detachment... now go buy a Coke.” BUY A HAT OR A SHIRT OR ALL KINDS OF OTHER STUFF! https://my-store-f33989.creator-sprin...
