He was known for his unique blend of blues, jazz, and rock and roll, as well as his colorful stage persona and distinctive New Orleans accent. Dr. John began his career in the 1950s, playing piano and guitar with various New Orleans R&B and rock and roll bands. He released his debut album, "Gris-Gris," in 1968, which showcased his eclectic musical style and introduced his persona as Dr. John the Night Tripper. The album was a critical and commercial success, and established Dr. John as a unique and innovative force in the music industry. Throughout his career, Dr. John continued to release albums and collaborate with other musicians.
