HARDENING OFF YOUR PLANTS is crucial to ensure your tender seedlings transition smoothly from indoor to outdoor life. Learn from my mistakes on this important step! WHY is hardening off important? It's like a boot camp for your plants, preparing them to withstand outdoor challenges. By gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions, you're bolstering their resilience, encouraging stronger stems, and ultimately setting the stage for bountiful harvests. 3 fundamental steps of hardening off: Once you figure out WHEN to begin this process (3 weeks before your last frost date--don't know when that is? Comment "GARDEN ZONE" below and I can help you!), you will: 1. SHADE: Begin by introducing your plants OUTDOORS in the shade for 1-2 hours. This gentle transition shields them from the shock of direct sunlight, preventing sunburn and leaf damage. Gradually increase the hours in shade over the next few days. 2. SUN: Elevate your plants to full sun exposure as they grow accustomed to milder sunlight. Start in dappled sun for 1-2 hours and slowly position them in a sunny spot over the next few days-- ensuring ample sunlight throughout the day. This step encourages robust growth and primes your plants for outdoor life. 3. NIGHT: After about 1 week of daytime exposure, toughen up your green companions by leaving them outdoors overnight. This step exposes them to cooler temperatures and fluctuating conditions, preparing them for transplanting into garden beds. Do be cautious if temps go below 50 degrees. You might bring them back indoors if night time temps drop in the 40s. If you follow these 3 steps, you are good to go! Your plants will thrive in the garden. Just make sure you don't plant them out until your last frost date has passed (unless you are planting cold hardy plants). -- Newsletter: https://www.growahealthygarden.com/ga...
