When I was a kid, I loved the 5/4 loveliness of Everything’s Alright from Jesus Christ Superstar and particularly Marcia Hines’ version in which she sings dotted quavers against the first 3 beats (4-across-3*). When I was about 11 it dawned on me that if I kept that phrasing going, but little quicker (i.e. crotchet triplets) over the remaining 2 beats of the 5, it only takes a tiny push and pull to make it an even 7-across-5*. This kept me amused for a while, but I didn’t do anything with it. Then decades later, when I heard my friend Carl Pannuzzo's song called Seven. He performed it with his vocal trio, Acapelicans and when I first heard it, with its intro rhythm very much defined by the bass singer, who is very much feeling it in 5. I was thinking, "why is it called Seven when it's in 5?" But when the lead vocal started, clearly phrasing in 7, I got all excited, thinking, "Ooo, it's 7-across-5!!!" But I still didn't do anything with it. Then another decade or so later, when revisiting West African polyrhythmic music (particularly Ewe music), I realised the potential of combining it with the 5-across-7 thing into what I now called Malleable PolyPolyRhythm. Read more about it at: http://malwebb.com/mppr.html And you can hear the first 5-across-7 song I wrote here: https://switchontelethon.bandcamp.com... It eventually made sense to eventually create this mashup. Here're the original tunes: Mission Impossible (Lalo Shifrin): • Mission Impossible theme song (Original) Money (Roger Waters): • Money - Pink Floyd HD (Studio Version) Take Five (Paul Desmond): • Dave Brubeck - Take Five Unsquare Dance (Dave Brubeck): • Unsquare Dance Everything’s Alright (Andrew Lloyd Webber): • Everything's Alright Seven (Carl Pannuzzo): / seven But this isn't the first MPPR mashup I've done, this Plini/Brubeck one is: • Electric Sunrise (Plini) meets Blue Rondo ... *I now use the word "across" rather than "against" or "over", as those words can imply grouping the same subdivisions in 5's and 7's, rather than 5-in-the-time-of-7, which is what I think "across" implies better. Also "over" implies a fraction the wrong way, as in: 4-across-3 is "3 divided by 4", thus 3/4 (aka "3 over 4) ...I aim to avoid that kind of confusion!
