In this video Dr. Lili explains how testicular pain should never be ignored in kids, teens, or even young adults. There are many sources of pain in the testicle, but the most important one is torsion, which means the cord twists on itself, cutting off the blood supply, which can lead to death of the testicle. Surgery by a qualified urologist is often necessary to correct the torsion within 6 hours of the onset of pain. Boys are often embarrassed and don't want to talk about the pain with their parents, so they often wait until it is too late to save the testicle. Early intervention is key in this medical emergency, so talk to your sons and let them know to tell you if this ever happens to them. In a time when parents are looking to the internet for medical advice and parenting advice, they are sometimes getting dangerous information. Dr. Lili is a board certified pediatrician, a medical doctor, who has a masters degree in public health and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics She is not speaking on their behalf, but sharing information about their guidelines, just as she does in her work as a pediatrician.
