Before he was elected in 2016 Donald Trump’s speeches were full of anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim sentiment. But this racialised language wasn’t just a promise of what was to come once in power. New research tells us that the rallies themselves had an impact on how minorities were treated - months before he was elected. This video is part of our school series 'Representation, Protest and Political Movement’, which looks at the intersection of economics, politics and history and the effect on modern society. It is based on the published research Inflammatory Political Campaigns and Racial Bias in Policing (Pauline Grosjean, Federico Masera, Hasin Yousaf). The project is a partnership between Discover Economics, the ESRC CAGE Research Centre and the All-Ireland Centre of Excellence in Economics, History and Policy (CEPH).
