Consumed by guilt, he forces himself and his two outlaw companions —a charismatic but vicious gunslinger named Billy and the eccentric, perpetually-cheating Turk— to escort the boy's widowed mother, Kit Tilden, on a perilous journey. Kit is determined to bury her son in a remote, abandoned town in dangerous Apache territory, alongside his deceased father. As the unlikely and hostile group traverses the arid landscape, their internal conflicts and buried secrets come to a head, leading to a violent and soul-searching confrontation.
