Massey Dialogues: France’s Colonial Legacy in Algeria and the Paradox of Grievability

On Wednesday, February 15, join the Massey Dialogues with special guest speaker Professor Hervé Tchumkam from Southern Methodist University on France’s Colonial Legacy in Algeria and the Paradox of Grievability from 5:00-6:00pm in the Junior Common Room. After more than one century of French occupation, Algeria became independent after a war that lasted eight years. During that bloody war, some Algerians- known as Harkis- aided the French army for various reasons. The term “Harkis” has also been extended to refer to any Algerian who favored the French presence over the National Liberation Front (FLN). As in Vietnam, an act of war was never officially declared, which made it easy for many in France to forget its tragic consequences. This talk will shed light France’s colonization of Algeria and the war that ensued, with a special emphasis on the Harkis, the Muslim Algerian loyalists who served as auxiliaries in the French Army during the Algerian War from 1954 to 1962. They were later abandoned in Algeria or, for those who successfully fled, contained in camps in France. My investigation into the Harkis as neither fully French nor Algerians will be twofold: 1) investigate the historical and political conditions of Algerian war and of the situation of the Harkis as undesirable citizens in France; 2) build on philosophical concepts such as camps and bare life, as well as a central interrogation on religion (Islam) as the element that sparked both the abandonment of the Harkis in Algeria and their social disqualification in France. Ultimately, this talk will interrogate what I term the “paradox of grievability”, through the means of a scrutiny of the value of human lives when these very humans are stranded between necessity and expendability, and reduced to their pure biological life.
