The officer left the parking lot with lights and sirens in an attempt to warn others but ended up in the middle of the storm’s debris path. The storm struck with little warning but lifted quickly and the deputy was unharmed. Eight people were injured in the storm and more than 70 homes were damaged. Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer issued a state of disaster emergency proclamation later that night. Tornadoes were also reported in Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois and North Dakota on the same day.
