CNBC Africa - AMSA closure impact on Automotive Components Industry

NAACAM CEO, Renai Moothilal was recently interviewed by CNBC Africa to discuss the impact of ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) closure on the SA automotive sector. In the interview, Renai noted that NAACAM’s assessment is more than 3,000 jobs in the sector are at immediate risk if the shutdown goes ahead and by the end of 2025, up to 13,000 jobs could be lost. Renai also highlighted that the SA government is clear in its ambition for the automotive sector to grow, as evidenced through the SA Autos Masterplan. Stakeholders, however, need to act quickly to find ways to protect key local input products like long steel, which are needed for automotive manufacturing, if sector growth targets are to be achieved.
