It was built on the site of a Byzantine abbey dating back to the 6th century. It later became a Benedictine abbey and eventually passed to the Franciscans, who restored it to its current Roman-Gothic style. The church features a stunning Romanesque-Gothic facade, with 22 columns, each different from the others, taken from Roman ruins. It is famous for housing the Santo Bambino of Aracoeli, a wooden statue of the Child Jesus believed to have miraculous powers. Unfortunately, the original statue was stolen in 1994 and never recovered, but a replica now resides in the church. The Aracoeli Staircase outside is an 124-step marble staircase leading to the basilica which was built in 1348 to celebrate the end of the Black Death. It is said that those who climb the stairs on their knees will win the lottery. Inside, you can admire beautiful frescoes by artists such as Pietro Cavallini and Pinturicchio, as well as various burials and funerary gravestones.
