Sonata for Recorder & Piano by Andy Meyers Andrew Collis: Recorders Andy Meyers: Piano January 2025 Printed copies available from www.recordermail.co.uk Digital Copies from www.andymeyers.org This Sonata for Descant & Sopranino recorders was written in 1991 for Maria Meyers - I set out to write a real duo where piano and recorders share the musical material more equally than many works for this combination! The work starts with GABCD - as played in many classrooms but this figure is immediately turned minor then contrasted with jumping 4ths. The middle movement is a cantilena where recorder and piano get the opportunity to be really expressive. The final movement uses an inversion of the opening melody and other figures from the first movement before the introduction of a jig-like melody in 5/8. Towards the end, another theme from the opening movement is reintroduced now played on the soprano recorder leading to a final dramatic conclusion intended to 'wow' the audience!
