SPOILER WARNING “Promising Young Woman” is a female focused movie, in terms of story, character arc, and the soundtrack. Like most songs in the movie, “Angel in the Morning” featured in the final scene is pure adulterated irony. A love ballad tranposed to a darker, more twisted and fatalistic tone, about victimhood, sinners and revenge. Cassie (Carey Mulligan) previous night confronts Alex (Christopher Lowell), who years ago raped and caused the death of her best friend Nina. But Cassie gets overpowered by Alex and gets murdered. Next morning, via scheduled text messages to Alex’s friend Ryan (Bo Burnham), it is revealed that she had planned this all along, using herself as bait to get Alex to commit the crime, and eventually in full Karma gets arrested in his own wedding. Juice Newton’s rendition of “Angel in the Morning” plays through the entire scene, suggesting Cassie as the angel in the sky descending justice upon who harmed her and her best friend.
