The hermitage in Butrio (Pavia) was built in 1030 on a donation from the marquis, after a hermit had healed his son who was mute from birth. The bell tower was built by the best architects of the 13th century. The tower was demolished by Napoleon in 1810 and partially rebuilt in 1856 with the addition of the belfry, which has three bells, two of which were cast in Genoa. The medieval tower is known for housing the famous Carroccio bell, donated by the Bishop of Milan to the army of the League that fought Emperor Frederick Barbarossa at the Battle of Legnano, defeating him. The famous bell called Martinella was kept by the Malaspina nobles and donated to the Abbey of St. Albert in the 15th century and recast using the same material of bronze, gold and silver in 1454. Three bells, two of which are played with strings and one with a motor: Historic bell, heir to a bell from the 1100s, musical note A Second bell cast in 1857, with the musical note D Third bell cast in 1856, with the musical note C sharp The three bells were rung by me, after having obtained permission from the friars who live in this magnificent place. The friars are those sent by Don Orione, one of the holiest people who lived in Italy, founder of a worldwide institute that cares for the disabled. The hermitage of Butrio was created in the Oltrepò Pavese in the mid 11th century; the main church was built between 1030 and 1050 with the help of the marquis. After the death of the miracle-working saint Alberto, the hermitage came under the direct protection of Pope Gregory VII. The monastery hosted Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, Dante Alighieri and even the fugitive King Edward II of England, who was deposed in 1327 and murdered on his return home. In 1600 the monastery was abandoned, almost collapsing with the arrival of Napoleon. In 1900, the saint's remains were exhumed and the building complex restored. The church is a thousand years old; the most beautiful part is the entrance chapel, frescoed throughout: one of the most beautiful medieval works in Europe. 0:00 Documentary 2:31 Ringing of the bells 5:25 Legendary bell Music track: Cinematic Documentary Romantic by Infraction [No Copyright Music] / Landforms #bell #church #catholic #culture #italy #summer #bells #history #landscape #view #catholicchurch #mountain
