Islamic Courses presents: IBN 'ASHUR’S EDUCATIONAL THOUGHT: REFORM AND RENEWAL OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION With Dr Fella Lahmar [University of Bolton]* ABOUT: This session explores Muhammad Al-Tahir ibn 'Ashur's (1296-1394/1879-1973) vision of educational reform and renewal based on his critical analysis of the causes of the decline in the Islamic educational thought and practice. The mosque/university of Al-Zaytuna was the traditional institution of Tunisian ‘ulama learning from which Ibn 'Ashur graduated and within which he taught and led. Ibn ‘Ashur's proposed reform to Al-Zaytuna's 'ulama learning is based on the maqasidi approach and view of change within the ummah as involving both individual and social ongoing intertwined transformation dynamics. Dr Lahmar will analyse Ibn ‘Ashur's pioneer educational proposals for the traditional Islamic educational institutions in terms of content, educational goals, teacher education, pedagogical practices, and the teacher's role. This presentation forms part of a book in progress with Routledge entitled: "Islamic Schools in Western Europe: Objectives, diversity and belonging" by Dr Fella Lahmar. The book adopts Ibn 'Ashur's Maqasidi approach to analysing Islamic schooling in Western Europe. Some pre-reading here on the topic: https://www.mdpi.com/2077-1444/11/8/4...
