Hiking John's Mountain | Pinhoti Trail Review

Y'all, I'm not going to sugarcoat it — this trail tried to break us. Chad and I tackled the Pinhoti Trail at John's Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest, and this 5-mile loop with nearly 1,000 feet of elevation gain is no joke. We started at 10 a.m. thinking, "How hard can it be?" Spoiler: very. By the half-mile mark we were already on our second rest break, huffing and puffing up the side of that mountain. But here's the thing — every single time I think about giving up on one of these hikes, something beautiful stops me in my tracks. And this trail delivered. The waterfalls. Oh my goodness. We actually passed what we thought was THE waterfall and then found the real one further up. Massive, gorgeous, and absolutely worth every sweaty step. The rocks along this trail are unlike anything we've seen — Chad and I decided they looked like Tetris stacked up along the cliffs. And that mountain laurel? I cannot wait to come back in spring and see it blooming. We visited Katie and Chen in New Hampshire last July and the mountain laurel there was just unreal — I'm now convinced our own backyard is going to give that a serious run for its money. Here's my honest review: this is NOT a walk. It is a hike. Steep, uneven, rocky, and relentless going up. Going up wrecks my glutes. Going down punishes my knees. We were five hours and eight minutes in when we had maybe a mile left — and we had to laugh a little because young folks were just jogging past us like it was nothing. But you know what? We did it. All 5.6 miles. And that view from the lookout at 2.1 miles in? Postcard worthy. Chad said the whole hike was postcard worthy because he's the view. I cannot. A few things to know if you're planning this trail: there's no restroom at the top (I was wrong about that — it's a radio tower situation 😂), the rocks can be slick near the waterfalls, bring your walking sticks, and budget more time than you think you need.
