Bhairab is an Upazila under Kishoreganj district. The Shoe Factory in Bhairab rapidly grew from 1990s. At least 7,000 shoe factories have been set up in Bhairab. The shoes are made by skilled hands of craftsmen- working in 9types of activities including upper, cutting, pasting, sol, fitting, finish, screen print and color. These factories have employed thousands of people. The demand of these shoes produced in Bhairab is high in home and abroad. Particularly in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Singapore and Europe. Bhairab is also expanding its support business along with the shoe industry. Leather, rexine, foam, heels, covers, pasting’s, buttons, solutions, boxes and boards. The printing industry is also being developed alongside. Shoes are basically made manually in Bhairab. Local people start learning shoe making under a skilled craftman. Due to lack of willingness of entrepreneurs to use modern technologies, lacke of technical skill of the workers in using modern equipment, and following manual method of production the quality of shoes could not improved. Initiative has been taken to mechanize the micro shoe industry for improving the quality of shoes and for expanding the market of Bhairab shoes under a value chain sub-project. PKSF is implementing this value chain sub-project through its partner organization, People's Oriented Program Implementation (POPI) under IFAD supported Promoting Agricultural Commercialization and Enterprises (PACE) project. For mechanization of micro-shoe industry in Bhairab common service centers are being established with the support of PACE project.
