This famous ‘Rondeau’ is the first movement from the ‘Suite of Symphonies for brass, strings & timpani No. 1’ by Mouret. Jean-Joseph Mouret was mainly a composer for the stage and was a contributor to the French opera-ballet, a genre of musical events that were participatory pageants enjoyed by the French Royal courts. Mouret’s non-theater works include motets, airs, divertessements, sonatas and fanfares. __________ These pieces were recorded in a lecture-recital presented by Nelson Hatt at the Westchester campus of Houston Community College where Nelson was an instructor. The Gallery Brass Quintet, as we were called, presented much of the music it performed for two Young Audiences shows - “Music Moves” and “Made in the U.S.A.” Numerous performances helped the group hone these tunes. Nelson had replaced our trumpeter Kevin Tarrant who had moved to Chicago to study trumpet with the renowned Vincent Cichowicz. Nelson’s years of touring, notably with Woody Hermann and his ‘Thundering Herd’ brought a unique perspective to the group. Nelson sadly passed away suddenly from complications of heart surgery in 1995. ~ Steve D. Matchett, October 3, 2020
