In March, 2020, I went to transplant an elderberry I saw flowering on a hill the previous summer. A drought late in that year had killed the trunk, but new life had started to sprout from the base. I dug up the elderberry bush and moved it to a sunny spot inside a deer fence. Deer love to eat elderberry...often right down to the ground. The elderberry shrub quickly took to it's new location, and the sprouts on the stump flourished. In June, the elderberry stood 3 feet tall (1 meter). I am hoping that it will flower next year. During dry spells, I water the elderberry once a week. This is especially important when transplanting trees, as much of their root system and ability to absorb water is lost when it is dug out from it's original location. Even though it was inside a large, fenced-in area to protect it from deer, I also built a secondary protective cage around it. It only takes 1 deer a few minutes to undo many months of growth, not to mention the effort of moving the shrub in the first place. I always find it wise to take extra precautions to protect trees from deer.
