Welcome to the foothills of Meteora, Kalambaka, Greece!!!! It was an awesome adventure as we experienced the history and soul of Meteora. Many of the monks that came here did so in the 14th and 15th centuries fleeing the Ottoman Empire. They wanted to be sure they would always be safe. Although you see the pic of the largest monastery, we actually climbed the 166 stairs and entered the second largest one, the Holy Monastery of Varlaam. It was establish by monk Varlaam and a few others around 1350 AD. After his death, during the 16th century, two brothers decided to fix up the area to what we were able to see today. In 1925, a fire broke out at the monastery and ragesd for many days. The women in the small village of Kastraki created a human chain to pass buckets of water to the top. After several days the fire stopped. Because of their heroic actions, woman were finally allowed to enter the monastery. Women coming to the rescue! The monastery of Varlaam is the most active male monastery and is currently occupied by 8 monks. We were able to go inside the small Church of All Saints and see the most beautiful frescoes.
