Khmer, the official language of Cambodia, is an Austroasiatic language spoken by over 16 million people. It is one of the oldest languages in Southeast Asia with roots tracing back to the ancient Khmer Empire. Khmer uses a unique script derived from Brahmi, featuring complex syllabic characters that represent consonants with inherent vowels, and vowel diacritics. Unlike many regional languages, Khmer is non-tonal, relying instead on vowel length and context for meaning. The language has absorbed numerous influences over centuries, particularly from Sanskrit and Pali, due to historical Indian cultural and religious impact, and from Thai and French through trade and colonial history. Khmer is used in government, education, media, and daily life across Cambodia, with regional dialects that vary slightly in pronunciation and vocabulary. The Khmu language is an Austroasiatic language spoken by the Khmu people, primarily in northern Laos, with significant communities in Vietnam, Thailand, and southwestern China. It belongs to the Khmuic branch of the Austroasiatic family and has approximately 500,000–700,000 native speakers. The language is integral to the cultural identity of the Khmu ethnic group, known for their traditional agricultural practices, oral literature, and rich spiritual traditions. Khmu is a tonal language with a complex phonological system and is traditionally an oral language, though efforts have been made to develop writing systems using Latin or Lao scripts. It plays a vital role in preserving the Khmu people's heritage and traditions in the face of modernization and globalization.
