Doshisha University was founded in 1875 by Joseph Hardy Neesima (Jo Niijima) as Doshisha Eigakko (Academy) in Kyoto, in 1875. Since then, Doshisha welcomes students both from Japan and abroad. For "Study in Japan Virtual Fair 2024", three of the current Doshisha students introduce what they are studying at Doshisha, why they chose Doshisha, the most interesting or stimulating points in Doshisha or in Kyoto etc. 【History of Doshisha】 Neesima was born as a son of a Samurai during the final years of the Edo period. He saw an urgent need to study in the West, so he risked his life to leave Japan and studied in the U.S. when it was strictly prohibited by the Tokugawa authorities to travel overseas. He studied at Phillips Academy, Amherst College, and Andover Theological Seminary and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Amherst College. It is said that he is the first such Japanese person to receive a degree from a Western institution of higher learning. After his return to Japan, he founded the predecessor of Doshisha University, with just 8 students and 2 teachers, which is now one of the oldest private institutions of higher learning in Japan. 【Present Doshisha】 Doshisha University has now 14 faculties and 16 graduate schools. As for English-based programs, Doshisha University offers the Institute for the Liberal Arts Program for undergraduate students. For graduate students, International Science and Technology Course [ISTC], Global MBA/Global Business and Management Studies [GBMS] and Graduate School of Global Studies welcome students who wish to study in English. Located in Kyoto, one of the oldest cities in Japan and renowned for its rich tourism resources, your stay in Doshisha University will give you an irreplaceable experience in your life.
