The global lithium production has shifted strongly toward Australia and South America. In the 1990s, Chile was the world’s dominant producer, supplying roughly 8,000–10,000 metric tons annually from the Salar de Atacama and accounting for a large share of global output. Beginning in the mid-2010s, Australia rapidly expanded hard-rock spodumene mining and became the clear leader; by 2023–2024 it produced about 86,000–100,000 metric tons per year—around half of global mine supply—making Oceania the top-producing region overall. In South America, Chile remains a major producer (around 44,000 metric tons in 2023), while Argentina has grown quickly, exceeding 9,000–10,000 metric tons and continuing to expand capacity. In Asia, China is a significant producer (about 33,000 metric tons in 2023) and also dominates lithium processing, while Zimbabwe has recently increased output sharply, becoming Africa’s largest lithium producer. Brazil contributes smaller but growing volumes. In North America, the United States produces a modest amount (around 1,000–5,000 metric tons in recent years, mainly from Nevada), while Europe has very limited mine production, with Portugal being its main producer at small scale. Overall, since 2017 Australia has led globally, South America (especially Chile and Argentina) forms the second major supply center, Asia—driven by China—remains crucial, and the “Rest of World” contributes relatively small shares compared with these leading regions.
