My video project is a slide show presentation set to the music of "Hard Time Killing Floor" composed by Nehemiah Curtis "Skip" James. I have performed the song myself, my version being heavily influenced by Chris Thomas King's cover of "Hard Time Killing Floor". The lyrics have been revised to convey an historical account of the Memphis race riots of 1866, as if written by a African American Civil War veteran posted at Fort Pickering. The lyrics tell the story of a man born a slave, who fought for the Union during the Civil War and witnessed the riots that took place on May 1st through the 3rd in Memphis, Tennessee. My goal in this project was to convey both musically and lyrically the spirit of an underprivileged African American who is oppressed by the world around him, yet looks forward to a brighter future, whether it be in this life or the next. Enjoy!
