Let's review the mountain terrain and Pros and Cons of Crested Butte. Crested Butte is one of the smaller major ski resorts in Colorado, but it has some benefits many of over the larger resorts. Pro: Advanced Terrain. The first Pro is the number and variety of advanced slopes. Crested Butte is 62% black and double black diamond terrain. You can find bowls, tree runs, traditional bump runs, and European style open terrain all accessible from the Silver Queen Express chairlift, the High Lift T-bar, and the North Face T-bar. Con: Less Convenient to Get to. Crested Butte is a bit further from Denver than resorts like Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper Mountain. So you'll either need to take a short connecting flight or drive a little longer. But in the grand scheme of things, it's not that much of a burden. Pro: Shorter Chairlift Lines. Perhaps because it is a bit further from Denver, the lines tend to be shorter. Locals confirm it. On a weekend in March 2024, I had a few lines that took 3-4 minutes, and no lines at any other time. Pro/Con: The Town. This depends on your perspective. Whether you stay at Crested Butte or Mt. Crested Butte at the base of the ski slopes, both towns are what locals describe as "sleepy." If you want to party, this is a Con. If you like it quiet, it's a Pro. There are limited restaurants and only one main market in Mt. Crested Butte. Gunnison offers more, but it's an hour away. Con: Age of the Chairlifts. Crested Butte has 12 chairlifts, only 4 of which are high speed. If you're a beginner, most of the chairlifts that you ride will be older and slower. Pro/Con: Epic Pass Effect. This also depends on your perspective. If you have the Epic Pass, this is a Pro. You can ski or snowboard at Crested Butte with your pass. The Con perspective is that prices of accommodations may trend up given the potential influx of Epic Pass holders. Many locals have already had to move out due to higher rents. Con: On-Mountain Food. Crested Butte has three restaurants on the mountain. A burger, fries and a drink can cost you over $20. And like the food at many Epic Pass resorts I've visited, it's good, but not worth the price in my opinion.
