Cooler temperatures do not mean that planting season is over! No way! Many people assume that a plant needs a certain amount of time to “settle in” and push roots into the ground before the weather gets cold. This can be true for some trees and plants that benefit from spring planting. The cooler temperatures mean they don’t dry out as quickly. And without the stressful heat of summer, fall can be an easier time to plant them. Planting in the fall is quick, and soon the plant will go dormant, which is an added bonus. I always love getting a few things planted in the fall so they're ready to grow with the first warmth of spring! Each season, I pay attention to what is blooming and what I would like more of in my garden beds. A lot of times, I want more asters. There are not many fall-blooming perennials and asters happen to be one. A few things to know about asters: Asters like full sun and well-drained, rich soil. There are different types of asters. I now plant wood-variety asters since they're a more compact version of older varieties of asters. These wood types are less likely to fall open or over. As with mums, asters benefit from pinching back before July 4th. This encourages more blooms and better branching. If you're planting aster, plant them like all other perennials: Rough up the roots slightly and plant no deeper than how it was growing in the container. Press the soil back around the plant. Water as much as you would for any new plant. If it rains less than one inch per week, the plant will need to be watered until it is dormant. Just this how happy you’ll be next year if you plant this year! #gardentip #gardenknowhow #gardenguru #gardenvideo #thatssowyse
