Ilminster Intermediate recognised Matariki with a full week of celebration to highlight the importance of culture across the kura. http://www.gisborneherald.co.nz/video   / videos      / gisborneherald   “The week focused on the principles of Matariki — reflection, letting go, looking forward, coming together and celebrating others,” assistant principal Shane Hooks said. “Students were taught the korero of Matariki, its importance and significance, and explored the stories and legends around the kaupapa. “Matauranga classes rotated through a number of activities across the week which were focused on culture and togetherness. “Students were immersed in experiences that included the Maramataka (lunar) calendar, traditional games, soundscapes based on the legend of Rangi and Papa, waiata, shared kai, kite-making and much more. “One of the highlights of the week was having our school pepeha put to music and our tamariki learning it as a waiata — highlighting our identity as a kura and creating a sense of whanaungatanga (connection). “A culturally responsive curriculum is a must as we move forward as a nation, and we see an increase in engagement from students when they can see their identity reflected across their school, in their learning and in their mahi.” Filmed and Edited by Ben Cowper SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c...
