Electrifying speed meets innovative engineering. Current Racing is pushing the limits of electric performance with the BC4, the fourth-generation evolution of their all-electric, world record breaking, Volkswagen Beetle drag racer. What started out nearly 20 years ago as a modest project running 50 mph at Santa Pod Raceway has transformed into an electric car that blasts through the quarter-mile in just eight seconds at over 165 mph. We follow Sam and Olly Young from Current Racing and Amtecs as they take us behind the scenes of the BC4 - a car that proves electric vehicles can deliver breathtaking performance and capture the heart of motorsport fans everywhere. Sam and Ollly, lifelong Volkswagen enthusiasts, talk about the origin of the project: starting from classic Beetles, moving through drag racing’s noisy, petrol-fueled traditions, and arriving at a new vision - quiet, powerful, and unmistakably different. “People know the Beetle,” says Sam. “It’s not a supercar, yet it has more-than-supercar power.” The BC4 combines supercar-level performance with familiar design. From its fully carbon body to its chromoly chassis, every detail has been crafted for weight, balance, and precision. The powertrain — with its motors, batteries, and inverters positioned at the front — drives a classic drag racing setup featuring a Ford nine-inch rear differential and transmission between the seats. Ollie dives into the technical challenges of engineering an EV capable of setting global benchmarks. Achieving the right balance of speed, power, and stability; managing suspension and weight transfer during extreme acceleration; and continuously pushing the boundaries of what electric drive systems can achieve. With the support of Amtecs, which provides the high-performance electric motors to power the BC4, this project demonstrates what’s possible when innovation meets passion. Current Racing and Amtecs will be bringing the world-record-breaking BC4 to Smart Manufacturing Week, inspiring the next generation of engineers, innovators, and thrill-seekers.
